In my advanced-level course on Film Adaptation, I supplemented seminar discussions and brief lectures with occasional re-edits of films and theoretical video essays. For example, I edited the death of Sherlock Holmes before the opening credits of "Game of Shadows" (2011) to have students reflect on how moving narrative elements in the adaptation process can shift the entire meaning of a piece. The below clip "The Source Spiral" represents one of my theoretical video essays. In it, I foreground a tension in adapters existing between seeking to replicate what came before versus looking to sever the cord between old and new by making a radical departure from the source material.
